385 Reclaiming Your Voice with Kevin Hancock

Kevin Hancock, featured in the New York Times, and author of 48 Whispers (Post Hill Press; https://thebusinessofsharedleadership.com/).
As the CEO of Hancock Lumber, Kevin struggled to guide the two-century-old lumber company through the 2007 collapse of the housing market only to lose some of his voice to the rare neurological speech disorder, spasmodic dysphonia. This experience sent him journeying more than twenty times to the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in search of voice recovery through self-reflection and immersion in nature.
While at Pine Ridge, he met an entire community that felt a piece of their authentic voice had been taken or stolen from them—helping him realize there are lots of way to lose one’s voice in this world. From this experience, Kevin came to see life as a quest for self-actualization.
A unique photojournalism collection of short meditations, accompanied by full-page color photographs of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the northern plains, 48 Whispersexplores the concepts of shared leaders, dispersed power, and respect for all voices. Kevin’s full-page color photos and writings span a decade of over twenty visits to the region—during which time he builds a series of deep friendships on the reservation and takes two Lakota names.
